Why Does My Puppy Keep Having Accidents?
You have taken your puppy out five times today, and there is still a puddle in the living room. It is frustrating, but there is almost always a reason. Understanding the usual suspects helps you fix the problem rather than blame your puppy.
1. Too much freedom too soon
Giving a puppy free run of the house before it is reliably trained is the most common cause. A puppy that is not watched will sneak off to a corner. Limit access to one or two rooms, use gates and keep your puppy in sight or in a crate or pen. Expand freedom gradually.
2. Not enough trips
Young puppies need to go out very frequently. If accidents happen, shorten the time between breaks. Our potty training schedule by age shows typical frequencies.
3. Missed signals
Puppies often give subtle signs before they go, such as sniffing, circling or whining. If you miss them, the puppy goes where it is. Watch closely, and teach your puppy to signal, for example by ringing a bell at the door.
4. Not waiting long enough outside
Some puppies do not finish in one go. If you rush back in after a quick pee, your puppy may poop indoors. Stay outside for a few minutes more and walk around gently if needed.
5. Distraction
Outdoors can be so interesting that a puppy forgets why it is there. Keep a leash on, stand still and be boring until your puppy goes. Then reward and play.
6. Excitement or fear
Excitement during greetings or fear during storms can lead to urination. This is often involuntary and improves with age. Greet calmly and avoid overstimulation. See our guide to why dogs pee when excited.
7. Inadequate cleaning
If you have not removed the odor with an enzymatic cleaner, your puppy may smell the previous spot and return. Regular household cleaners often leave traces that dogs can detect.
8. Inconsistent routine
Irregular mealtimes, random walks and changes in who takes the puppy out can confuse your puppy. Keep a predictable schedule and share the plan with everyone in the home.
9. Lack of reward
If your puppy is not rewarded for going outside, it has little reason to prefer the outdoors. Praise and treat immediately.
10. Punishment
Scolding after an accident teaches your puppy to hide when it goes, which leads to sneaky indoor toileting. Stay calm and focus on prevention.
11. Medical issues
Medical problems can cause accidents.
- Urinary tract infections can cause frequent urination and urgency. See our guide to urinary tract infections in dogs.
- Parasites or gastrointestinal upsets can cause diarrhea and urgency.
- Diabetes or kidney problems may increase thirst and urination.
- Incontinence may occur in some puppies.
Contact your vet if your puppy:
- Strains to urinate or produces only drops
- Has blood in the urine
- Drinks a lot more than usual
- Has sudden regression after being reliable
- Has persistent diarrhea
12. Marking
Some puppies, particularly males, begin marking as they approach adolescence. Marking is different from emptying the bladder. Clean thoroughly, supervise and consider neutering discussions with your vet.
A troubleshooting checklist
- Have I increased the frequency of trips?
- Am I supervising or confining my puppy?
- Am I waiting long enough outside?
- Am I rewarding immediately?
- Is my schedule consistent?
- Have I cleaned with an enzymatic product?
- Could there be a medical cause?
If you can answer yes to the first six and the problem persists, see your vet.
Reset the training
If accidents continue, start over: tighten supervision, use a crate or pen, take frequent trips and reward each success. Many puppies need a reset after a change, such as a move or an illness. See our full guide on how to potty train a puppy.
The takeaway
Accidents are information, not defiance. Look for patterns, adjust your management and stay calm. With the right changes, your puppy will get it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my puppy pee right after coming inside?
Your puppy may not have finished outside, got distracted or the outdoor spot may be too exciting. Stay out longer and wait for completion.
Why does my puppy poop in the house after going outside?
Puppies often need a second trip. Wait outside a few minutes more, and take another trip soon after.
Could my puppy have a medical problem?
Possibly. Frequent urination, straining, blood in urine or sudden regression are reasons to see your vet.
Do puppies have accidents on purpose?
No. Accidents are not spite. They reflect limited control, unclear training or missed opportunities.
