Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin? Fibre for Upset Stomachs

By Tailwisp Editorial TeamUpdated October 17, 20263 min read

Pumpkin is one of the best-known home remedies for dogs, and for good reason. It is cheap, safe and available all year in cans. But it works through simple fibre and moisture, not magic, and the details matter.

Nutrition

Pumpkin is mostly water, with a good amount of soluble fibre, plus beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium and small amounts of other nutrients. It is very low in calories. See our guide to fibre for dogs.

Why it helps digestion

Soluble fibre absorbs water, forming a gel that can bulk up loose stool. It also adds moisture and bulk to hard stool and helps it move through the gut. That is why pumpkin is suggested for both constipation and diarrhea. It also feeds beneficial gut bacteria. It is a gentle support, and it will not fix a serious problem.

Fresh versus canned

  • Canned pumpkin puree. Convenient and consistent. Make sure the label says one hundred percent pumpkin, with no sugar, spices or additives.
  • Fresh pumpkin. Remove the skin, seeds and stringy parts, cook until soft and mash. Serve plain.
  • Pumpkin pie filling. Do not use. It contains sugar, spices such as nutmeg and sometimes xylitol. See nutmeg and xylitol.

How much?

A common starting guide is about one teaspoon for small dogs, up to a tablespoon or two for large dogs, mixed into food, once or twice a day. Introduce gradually, because too much fibre can cause gas and loose stools. Count it within your dog's daily calories, though the amount is small.

For constipation

Add pumpkin to meals and make sure your dog drinks plenty of water. If constipation lasts more than a day or two, or your dog is straining, vomiting or in pain, see your vet. Constipation can have serious causes. See our guide to constipation in dogs.

For diarrhea

A spoonful of pumpkin may help firm up mild, short-lived diarrhea in an otherwise bright dog. But diarrhea can be caused by infections, parasites, toxins and many other issues. See our guide to diarrhea in dogs. Seek veterinary help if it lasts more than a day or two, contains blood, or your dog seems unwell, especially puppies and seniors.

Pumpkin seeds

Plain, shelled, unsalted pumpkin seeds are safe in small amounts when ground or chopped, but whole seeds can be a choking hazard. They are not a proven parasite treatment, despite what some websites claim. Use proper deworming. See our puppy deworming guide.

Pumpkin in treats and recipes

You can mix pumpkin with plain yogurt and freeze it, stir it into homemade biscuits or stuff it into a toy. Check recipes for safe ingredients.

Storage

Refrigerate opened canned pumpkin in an airtight container and use within about a week, or freeze in small portions in an ice cube tray.

Dogs that need caution

  • Diabetic dogs. Ask your vet.
  • Dogs on prescription diets. Ask before adding anything.
  • Dogs with pancreatitis. Pumpkin is low in fat and often tolerated, but check with your vet.

Pumpkin versus other fibre options

Pumpkin is gentle and mostly soluble fibre. Alternatives include psyllium husk, cooked sweet potato and a small amount of cooked oats. Each behaves a little differently, so if pumpkin does not help after a few days, do not simply add more. Ask your vet whether a different fibre source or a dedicated digestive diet would suit your dog. Stools that are very dark, bloody or accompanied by vomiting need prompt veterinary attention.

The takeaway

Plain pumpkin is a safe, helpful supplement for digestion. Use small amounts, never the pie filling, and see a vet for persistent problems. See our sensitive stomach diet guide for more.
